How to Make a Small Living Room Appear Bigger

Many of us live in homes with little space, it’s just something we have to deal with in the modern world. Increased population growth over the last 60 years has meant that new houses are often at lot smaller than their older predecessors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of what you’ve got. With a few simple tips and tricks, you’ll soon be able to make your living space seem larger, even if it is only an illusion.

This guide will help you to make the best design choices when renovating your living room.

Purchasing long curtains that are the same colour as your new wall paint can have a truly impressive effect. This helps to avoid contrast and creates a solid, consistent, feature, that is guaranteed to open up any living area. If this option doesn’t seem ideal for you, why not pick up some light coloured blinds, as these can often produce the same effect.

Window Space

If you live in a home with particularly large windows, avoiding net curtains can allow more natural light to flow through, truly bringing the outside colours indoors. This usually works best if your living room backs onto a nice garden, although the technique can be just as effective for flats or apartments that are raised off the ground.

However, if your window looks out onto a busy street, it might be worth considering a different option.

Raised Furniture

Getting hold of some new, light coloured, furniture can often be a huge benefit. Try buying sofas and chairs that don’t quite sit on the floor, as this allows light to travel more effectively through your property.

For really small rooms, armchairs are probably a better solution, although they won’t be as comfortable, so you need to weigh up the pros and cons based on your personal usage of the space.

Opting for furniture with storage space is a fantastic way of hiding all those unsightly accessories. Also, throwing away items you’ve not used for over a year is a good way of ensuring you’re not hoarding unnecessary possessions.

Consider a trip to somewhere like IKEA to get ideas, but always take the time to browse online before making a purchase, as you’ll often encounter better deals.

Perhaps the most important and effective way of creating the illusion of space: lighting, should be at the top of your “to do” list. Add some living room LED lighting for the best results, whilst trying your best to avoid floor lamps and other such items, as they are sure to take up lots of much needed space.

So there you have it. A quick and simple guide to allowing more light into your living room and utilising the space you have to its full potential. If you follow some of the tips mentioned in this article, your room will be looking larger in no time, and your design skills will be the talk of the town.

Good luck!
