How to Teach Yourself to Play Guitar In Just a Few Hours: For Total Beginners

Written by ClickHowTo Team

Have you thought about picking up the guitar but you haven’t yet? Well my friend, this post is for you! For those of you reading this who aren’t musicians, you’d be surprised at just how easy it can be! It goes without saying that becoming a musician is lots of fun too, so it’s worthwhile. Hopefully, this post will convince those of you who are scared, to pick up the guitar and successfully put your own songs together. Many people believe a multitude of untrue things, like they’re too old, they have no talent, or that it will take years to learn to play – I can assure you, this is all false! Learning to play guitar is simply about teaching your fingers to make these strange shapes that they don’t usually make – that’s it. Yes, it’ll take a few hours…perhaps 10 in total. But you should be playing some great songs soon enough!

Let me start off by telling you something that might shock you: everything you need to know to learn guitar can be taught in 5-10 minutes. It’s simply 5 finger shapes that you have to remember. The rest of the time you’ll spend teaching your finger muscles to effectively play the chord shapes! Don’t worry either – you don’t need to be the next Jimi Hendrix. You can easily impress people by just showing up and playing what you’ve learned. You can instantly increase your sex appeal with a guitar!

  • Start off by taking up to 30 minutes to read this post. It includes all you need to find the courage to start!

  • Afterwards, take another 30 minutes to practice the 5 basic shapes. This is definitely the hardest part! Try to ram these chords into your memory whatever it takes. Once you’re familiar with them and getting good at them (this will take longer than the 30 minutes it’s taken you to remember them), you can begin to experiment and take away/add fingers.

  • From now on, take the rest of your time picking up the guitar and practicing for at least 30 minutes per day. It takes 21 days for something to become a habit, so make it a habit! Get your fingers accustomed to moving on the fretboard, sing along to your favourite tunes and do your best to keep up with the changes.

  • Here’s a Youtube tutorial to start you off. You can find plenty more helpful videos on Youtube.

  • Jamplay also have some great tips so you can teach yourself guitar.

To get really really good at strumming and other things, of course it’ll take you a little longer than a few hours. This post is simply trying to convey how easy it is to get the basics in just a few hours! Your fingers will probably hurt and you may even get frustrated, but it’ll all be worth it when you can say you taught yourself to play guitar. Let us know how it’s going in the comments!
