Each year, millions of people are injured in accidents through no fault of their own. These injuries can be incredibly painful and can affect how people can live their lives. Personal injuries can also cause all sorts of problems in terms of finances, work and family life.
Personal injuries can occur anywhere – at home, on the road or in the workplace, and most of the time, they are caused by a third party. For instance, if you were at work and fell down the stairs due to a rip in the carpet, your employer would be at fault. This means that you would have the right to make a compensation claim against them.
If you have been injured through no fault of your own during the last three years, then you may be entitled to make a compensation claim. To do this, the first thing you will need to do is pick an expert personal injury lawyer:
For our guide to picking the best lawyer, have a read of this:
- Do some research
Start off by doing some research, look into the different compensation lawyers in your area and read up about each firm. Once you have a basic understanding of each company, narrow the list down to two or three companies.
Go to each law firm’s website and have a look at the lawyers on there, try to find out which lawyer deals with personal injury claims. This will allow you to do additional research on the lawyer who you would deal with.
- Choose an expert
Don’t just choose a lawyer who deals with law, in general, instead opt for an expert in the personal injury field.
Make sure that any lawyer you choose has lots of experience dealing with similar cases.
- Make sure your lawyer is certified
Before agreeing to use a particular lawyer, make sure to check that their activities are regulated by the correct boards. As well as that they are fully certified and registered to practice law.
- Choose a no-win no-fee lawyer
Make sure that when you choose a lawyer, that they are willing to work on a no-win, no-fee basis. Otherwise, you could be left out of pocket and in a lot of debt.
It is also a good idea to ensure that you pick a lawyer that does not take any deductions from your compensation. Aside from payment for their services, of course.
- Ask for referrals
If you are unable to find a lawyer that you feel comfortable with, ask your friends or family for a referral. There is no better way to find a lawyer than via word of mouth, especially if the referral comes from someone that you trust.
Talk to your friends, family and co-workers as they may have an experience making a personal injury claim of their own.
Look for a lawyer who is willing to offer more than only trying to get you compensation. It is important that you choose a lawyer who discusses what your expectations are and does not just assume that financial compensation is what you want.
Many people who have suffered from personal injuries, just want to return to their pre-accident state and lifestyle. For example, the injured person may need to receive rehabilitative treatment to allow them to go back to their old state.
