How To Keep Your Cat Healthy In Five Easy Steps

Written by ClickHowTo Team

Cats often seem to take care of themselves. They’re independent little creatures, which means that unlike dogs they’re a great pet for a busy person. You don’t have to take your cat for walks, you don’t have to take it to countless obedience classes – but you do have to make sure that you spend plenty of time with him or her to build a good relationship that will keep both of you happy, and you also have to make sure that you keep your cat healthy. Here are some tips to help you do that…

Take Them For Regular Check Ups

You should be taking yourself off to the doctor for any regular health checks like gyno exams, so of course it makes sense that you should be taking your cat to the vet for a health check on a regular basis, generally once a year. Your vet will weigh your cat, talk to you about what you should be doing to take care of it, and generally make sure that you’re the proud owner of a happy, healthy feline.

Be Aware Of Any Behavioural Changes

Make sure that you’re aware of your cat’s daily routines – they are generally creatures of habits so if they change what they’re doing, that could be an indication that something’s wrong. Just like people do, cats tend to slow down as they get older so that isn’t anything to worry about – but if they’re bad-tempered, resistant to you stroking them in the same way that you usually do, lethargic, or off their food, then you should make an appointment with your vet.

Keep Your Cat’s Coat Healthy

It’s important to make sure that your cat’s coat is glossy and healthy. Cats often groom themselves but you can give them a helping hand by brushing them once a day in the direction their fur lays – this will also reduce the amount of furballs that you accidentally step in first thing in the morning! You should also make sure that they’re free of fleas with treatments like Capstar – not only will fleas make them uncomfortable but they can also transfer to other pets and family members.

Feed Your Cat Correctly

Even if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you should feed your cat an animal based diet derived from meat. You can supplement it with fish, chicken or cat milk – but make sure that the food you buy from stores contains meat and taurine, which contributes towards making your cat’s eyes healthy. Give your cat fresh water every morning and remember that wet food can help to reduce dehydration.

Care For Your Cat’s Teeth

Make sure that you check your cat’s teeth and gums regularly – the gums should be pink and the teeth should be white (just like inside your own mouth!). You can also get toothbrushes and toothpaste made especially for cats, although you’ll have to get your pet used to this over time. Your vet should make sure that your cat’s teeth are healthy during its check ups.
